You Foolish Man

You Foolish Man?
You foolish man,
do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?”
                                                        James 2:14-20
I was talking to a man the other day that claimed to be a Christian. Yet he went on and on about refugees trying to enter Canada illegally. Telling me that they should be sent back to where they came from.
This man reflects what is happening in the United States also. Many calling themselves Christians are speaking against the refugees that are coming to the border.
As I look on this I am saddened. Christians should be the first at the border to minister to these people. And while there are some Christian groups extending the hand of mercy to the refugees, the shouts of those against the refugees is drowning them out.
Teresa of Ávila said
“Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours; yours are the eyes through which to look at Christ’s compassion to the world, yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good, and yours are the hands with which he is to bless us now.” Mother Teresa of Avila
The American evangelist Tony Campolo put it this way,
“These issues are biblical issues: to care for the sick, to feed the hungry, to stand up for the oppressed. I contend that if the evangelical community became more biblical, everything would change.” Tony Campolo.
Christians are obligated to help those less fortunate. To quote James the half brother of Jesus,
“What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?
Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.
If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?
In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?” James 2:14-20.
Thus my question to you is. If you claim to be a Christian are you exhibiting good works? Are you doing what you can to help the needy in your community be they at the border or the homeless on the street? Or for that matter the less fortunate that are in your church congregation?
When you stand before God what will he say about what you did on this earth?
Please think about it.

Do you know there are 2000 verses in the Bible that deal with responding to the needs of the poor?

Who do you serve?

Who do you serve?

            Joshua said,

“Now therefore,
 fear the LORD,
serve Him
in sincerity
and truth,
and put away the gods which your fathers served
on the other side of the river and in Egypt.  Serve the LORD!
And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD,
choose for
yourselves
this day
whom you
will serve,
whether the
gods which your
fathers served
that were on the other side
of the river,
or the gods
of the Ammorites,
in whose land you dwell.
But as for me and my house,
 we will serve the LORD.”
                                     Joshua 24:14 & 15
Like it or not there are many gods in the twenty-first century. Money, material possessions, selfish ambition, political ambition. Anything that pulls you away from God is an idol.
Sadly many claiming to be Christians and many calling themselves Christian evangelist and pastors worship those gods also.
Thus the question is do you?
Please think about it.

You will find Him

You will find Him
In the book of Deuteronomy we find this quote,
“But if from there you seek the LORD your God,
you will find him
if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
                                                                     Deuteronomy 4:29.
You have to be looking for God? C. S. Lewis states,
“He shows much more of Himself to some people than to others-not because He has favourites, but because it is impossible for Him to show Himself to a man whose whole mind and character are in the wrong condition.” C. S. Lewis.
Lewis is right. Many who don’t believe in God are not really looking for Him. Many Atheist say I can’t see Him, touch Him, therefore he doesn’t exist. There minds are made up and nothing can convince them otherwise.
I admit I cannot prove God exists scientifically but I can see God’s handiwork in all creation.
The Psalmist tells us,
“The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.
There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.”
                                                                          Psalm 19:1-3.
When I look at the world around me and indeed the universe as a whole I see a perfect creation. A place where everything from the smallest subatomic particle to the largest galaxy is arranged in such a way as to allow life to exist as we know it.
I cannot believe this came into being purely by chance. That being said it takes faith to believe God exists.
God requires us to have faith in Him. The writer of Hebrews states,
“And without faith it is impossible to please God,
because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists
and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
                                                                       Hebrews 11:6.
Faith defined as,
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for
and certain of what we do not see.”
                                                   Hebrews 11:1.
God however does not ask for blind faith. God shows himself through the universe he created. All we have to do is truly be looking for God.
As the writer of Deuteronomy states,
“But if from there you seek the LORD your God,
you will find him
if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
                                                                     Deuteronomy 4:29.
Please think about it.

A Checklist for Love

A Checklist for Love,
Matthew’s gospel records this,
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40.
Jesus also said,
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,...” Matthew 5:43,44
For me the best definition of Love ever written about love was written by the apostle Paul. It is a checklist for true love. The apostle Paul writes,
“Love is patient,
love is kind.
It does not envy,
it does not boast,
it is not proud.
It is not rude,
it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil
but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects,
always trusts,
 always hopes,
always perseveres.
Love never fails....
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.
But the greatest of these is love.”
                                                         1 Corinthians 13:4-8a,13.
Is this your definition of Love? If so do you put this definition of Love into practice in word and in deed?
Please think about it.

A Warning

A Warning
The Poet wrote,
                                    A possible conversation with God
 A Man:
“You exist!”
God:
Of course I exist!”
Man:
“But I couldn’t see you?
I couldn’t touch you?”
God:
         “I know.
          I wanted it that way.”

Man: “Why?”

God:
“Because I wanted you
            To have faith in me.”

Man:
“But you could have showed
yourself in the flesh.”

God:
     “I did.
      I sent my Son Jesus.
He died for the sins of all who
      would believe in Him.
I even raised him from the dead.

Man:
     “But that’s unbelievable.
      It can’t be true?”

God:
          “But it is.
Why would anyone make that up?
And you had the choice.
          I gave you a freewill
To believe what you wished.
You exercised yours.

Man:
       “But you could have
        showed yourself to me.”

God:
      “I did.
       Through creation,
       Through my prophets,
       Through the Bible,
Through My One and Only Son.
I gave you a life time of chances.”

Man:
“So what will happen to me?”

God:
           Jesus said,
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.  Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son”.  John 3:16-18.
                              “What do you think?”
Post Script
If Christians are wrong in what we believe no one has anything to fear. If we are right there are eternal consequences for those who do not believe.
Please think about it.
