Live in Light
The Apostle John writes,
“Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.  
Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.  
But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.” 1 John2:9-11.
Throughout John’s writings we see this recurrent theme of Love. Indeed it is not just a recurrent theme with John. It is the main theme of the whole New Testament. 
John quotes Jesus speaking of himself as saying,
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16,17
Jesus emphasised the importance of love when asked,
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’  
This is the first and greatest commandment. 
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40.
Prior to that Matthew records.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,...” Matthew 4:43,44.
Love must be the key motivator for a believer in Christ.
We must love God, our neighbour, and even our enemy. This is a command from Jesus himself.
Believers in Christ must ingrained in their hearts and practice unconditional love towards all people. Unconditional love defined by the apostle Paul when he said,

“Love is patient, love is kind. 

It does not envy, it does not boast, 

it is not proud.  

It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, 

it is not easily angered, 

it keeps no record of wrongs. 

Love does not delight in evil 

but rejoices with the truth.  

It always protects, 

always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 

Love never fails....

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. 

But the greatest of these is love.”  

                                                                              1 Corinthians 13:4-8a,13.

We must remember the words of the apostle John who tells us,

“Anyone who claims to be in the light 

but hates his brother is still in the darkness.

Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, 

and there is nothing in him to make him stumble

Your Walk

Your Walk
The apostle John writes,
“We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.  
The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.  
But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him:  
Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.” 1 John 2:3-6.
The apostle John speaking to those who claim to be followers of Jesus Christ states very clearly,
“Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.”
Walking as Jesus did is walking in love for God, our neighbour and even our enemy. Jesus when asked,
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’  
This is the first and greatest commandment. 
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40.
Jesus also said,
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.  
If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?  
  And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?  Matthew 5:43-47.
Here is something for those who consider themselves believers in Christ to think about.
Jesus showed unconditional love to all he came in contact with.
In his lifetime he never spoke or protested against anyone outside his faith. He a Jew did speak against the religious leaders who were incorrectly practising the word of God.
He however did not speak against the secular Roman authority even when he was put on trial and led to his death
When the apostle John tells us
“Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.”
 This to my way of thinking is loving all people unconditionally. The apostle Paul defining love as,

“Love is patient, love is kind.

Sin and Forgiveness

Sin and Forgiveness
The Apostle John writes,
“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.  
If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.  
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.  
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.  
If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. 
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.  
He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” 1 John 1:5 - 2:2.
Here the apostle John talks about sin. Wrong doing.  Sin is falling short of God’s ideal for our lives. If we walk in sin we are walking in darkness. Darkness covers our sins at least from those around us. It does not however cover them from God.
In order to have fellowship with God we need to confess our sins. In the old Testament people would go to the temple in Jerusalem and sacrifice an animal to cover their sins. It was a practice they had to do regularly.
Jesus however came into the world as the final sacrifice. The blood of Jesus shed on the cross cleanses us from sin. John telling us.
“He (Jesus) is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”
John states clearly,
“...the blood of Jesus, His (God’s) Son, purifies us from all sin.”
John emphasizes,
“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.  
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.  
If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.”
We are all human. We all sin. We all fall short of God’s ideal for our lives. As soon as we realize we have sinned it is important that we confess that sin to God in prayer and as John states,
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
Are you willing to believe Jesus is the Son of God and accept the atoning sacrifice of Jesus for your sins?
Are you willing to accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour.
The apostle John telling us,
“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—  children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” John 1:12,13.
Please think about it. 

Beware of False Teachers

Beware of False teachers
The Apostle Peter writing to believers in Christ Jesus writes,
“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.  
Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.  
In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.” 2 Peter 2:1-3.
Peter here issues a waring about false prophets. He echoes the words of Jesus who said,
“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.  
By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?  
Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.  
A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.  
Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.  
  Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. 
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  
Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’  
Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ Matthew 7:15-23
Many in the world today are calling themselves Christians who are not. They as Peter states,
“They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.  
Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.”
As believers in Christ Jesus we need to watch carefully for such teachers. We need to know what we believe and why we believe what we believe.
As believers in Christ Jesus we have the right to judge the teachings of anyone claiming to be Christians.
As a result we need to listen carefully to what evangelist, pastors, priests, and even people just calling themselves Christians are saying.  We need to, within our churches stand up to false teaching.
The apostle Paul wrote,
“What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?  
God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked man from among you.” 1 Corinthians 5:12,13.
As believers in Christ Jesus we must alway remember to present to those around us the pure unadulterated word of God. It is the only way we will truly win souls for Christ.

Truth or Lie

Truth or Lie?
The Apostle Peter writes,
“We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.  
For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”  
We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. 2 Peter 1:16-18.
Peter makes it clear here that what he and the other apostles are preaching are not “cleverly invented stories”, it is the truth. Peter himself was there when voice came heaven saying of Jesus, “This is my Son whom I love; with him I am well pleased”.
In writing this he is saying to the reader you either believe me, or you do not. There is no middle ground.
If you believe what Peter has written then you must believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
If you do not believe Peter then Peter is a lying, as are all the writers of the New Testament.
Not only that they have perpetuated what has to be the greatest lie in human history. For close to three billion people in the world today believe Jesus is the Son of God, the Saviour of mankind as did millions if not billions of people from the days of Peter to the present.
Thus the choice comes down to you the reader. Who do you believe Jesus is, Son of God, and Saviour of mankind or not?
The choice is yours.

Simple Instructions

Simple Instructions
The Apostle Peter states,
“To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed:  
Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve;  not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.  
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. 
Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”  
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.  1 Peter 5:1-6.
Here the apostle Peter give some simple instructions to the elders of the Church and the young men of the Church.
To the elders he tells them:
1/ To be shepherds of God’s flock not because they must, 
but because the want to be. 
2/ They are told not to be greedy for money. 
3/ To be eager to serve.
4/ Not to lord over those under them.
5/ To set an example to those they are entrusted to lead.
To the young men Peter states,
 “Be submissive to those who are older.”
To both groups he states,
“Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another...”
Peter warns that,
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”  
Finally he tells us,

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, 

that He may lift you up in due time.”  

Good advice for all in the church today.

Suffer for the right thing

Suffer for the right thing
The apostle Peter tells us,
“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.  
But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.  
If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.  
If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.  
However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.” 1 Peter 4:12-16
I like what Peter states here. He states,
“If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.”
Notice, Peter is saying, you are blessed if you are insulted for associating with Christ. Jesus said,
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.  
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:11,12.
Again Jesus states, we are blessed if we are persecuted for our belief in Christ.
Many people well meaning Christians here in North America protest against the government for passing certain laws they disagree with. They yell insults and protest against groups they disagree with. Then when there is a negative backlash for what they do, they say they are being persecuted for their faith in Christ.
This is not so. They are being persecuted for their actions.
Jesus never protested. Jesus and the disciples never spoke against anyone outside their faith. Nor should we.
As believers in Christ, if we are to suffer persecution, let us be persecuted for believing in Christ Jesus. For presenting the pure message of Christ Jesus. A message of God’s love for all people.
Please think about it.  

Christ's Representatives

Christ's representatives 
The Apostle Peter writes,
“The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.  Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.  
Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.  
Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.  
If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 4:7-11
Peter believed the end of all things was near. It seems to be a common trait of every generation of Christians believe the end is near. A good thing. For as believers in Christ we should be working for Christ as if He is returning today.
The Apostle Paul however states,
“Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.” 1 Thessalonians 5:1,2
That being said the return of Christ is nearer than it was in days of the apostles. However God wishes to give everyone the chance to know Him personally. John’s gospel telling us,
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16,17.
  Peter however tells believers in Christ what they are to do until then,
“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.  
If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.” 
I particularly like the one phrase Peter states,
“If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God...”
As believers in Christ we must always remember that we are Christ’s representative on this earth. It is through our words and deeds that people will see Jesus. If our actions are negative towards those around us none-believers will get a negative image of Christ.
If on the other hand you represent Christ in a positive way people will see Jesus in a positive way and be drawn towards him.
I like the words of Francis of Assisi who said,

“The deeds you do

 may be the only sermon 

some persons will hear today” 

                                             Francis of Assisi.

Can get to Heaven
The Apostle Paul writes,
“All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.  
For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.  
(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)  
This will take place on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.” Romans 2:12-16.
When I was much younger the question arose from one of my friends. Can a person who has never heard the gospel message get to heaven.
My answer is an unequivocal yes. The apostle Paul make that clear in the above scripture. Paul states,
“All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law....”
He goes on to say, 
“Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.”  
God is a just God. He will only judge us by what we know. If a person has not received the gospel message or read or heard the teachings of the Bible, God will not hold that person accountable for what is written in them. However God will hold them accountable for what they know with regards to good and evil.
He will look at the persons heart and mind and Judge the individual accordingly.
Question: what do you think God will say about you when He judges you?

Strength in Weakness

Strength in weakness
The apostle Paul writes,
“To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.  
Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.  
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.  
That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 
When I read this passage I am reminded of the rich man that came to Jesus as recorded in Matthew’s gospel. Matthew records,
“Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” 
“Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.” 
“Which ones?” the man inquired. Jesus replied, “ ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’’” 
“All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” 
Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 
When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.” Matthew 19:16-22.
The young man in this situation put more faith in his wealth than in God. That is not what God wants.
The point here is that we should be putting our faith entirely in God not in our wealth or our own strength.
Now there is nothing wrong with being strong and wealthy. However we should not put our trust in them. Our wealth can vanish in an instant. Our strength can do the same.
The prophet Isaiah states,

“A voice says, “Cry out.” 

And I said, “What shall I cry?” 

“All men are like grass, 

and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. 

The grass withers and the flowers fall, 

because the breath of the LORD blows on them. 

Surely the people are grass. 

The grass withers and the flowers fall, 

but the word of our God stands forever.” 

                                                  Isaiah 40:6-8

It should be immaterial to our faith whether we have wealth and strength. We should never boast about these things. We need to believe the words Christ spoken to the apostle Paul when he said,
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 
If we must boast we should be boasting about Jesus and all He has done for us.
Please think about it.

Christians and Purity

Christians and Purity
The apostle Paul writing to the Corinthians states,
“Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” 
“I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” 
Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”2 Corinthians 6:17- 7:1.
In my previous blog post I noted that to be Christlike not only meant loving people but sitting down with sinners and others to present the message of Christ to them.
Here the apostle Paul is making it clear to believers in Christ that we need to keep ourselves clean from the contamination of the evil of the world.
However that does not mean refusing to associate with the people of this world. Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians states,
“I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.
But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.” 1 Corinthians 5:9,10,11.  
Paul make it clear we are not to associate with someone calling himself a brother in Christ who is doing immoral things.”
In 2 Corinthians 6:17-7:1, Paul is saying that we personally need to keep our lives clean. Paul makes it clear stating,
“...let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”
The apostle Peter writes
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.  
Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 
Dear friends,
 I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.  
Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” 1 Peter 2:9-12.
As believers in Christ we should be living as good a moral life as we can. So much so that without us even saying a word those around us will realize it and even be attracted to Christ because of it.

Being Christlike

Being Christlike
The Apostle Paul writes,

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; 

the old has gone, the new has come!” 

                                                                        2 Corinthians 5:17.

If we are truly sincere when we ask Christ into our life we do become a new creation. Slowly perhaps at first our lives begin to change. We start to turn away from things that are not pleasing to God. God becomes first in our lives and we have a truly hart felt desire to serve God in whatever way we can.
That being said here is something for you to think about if we want to be Christ like.
First of all if we desire to be Christ like we will desire to love. Jesus when asked,
 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’  
This is the first and greatest commandment. 
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40.
Not only that He said,
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

If you are becoming Christ like you will also “sit with sinners”
Matthew’s gospel records,
“While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and “sinners” came and ate with him and his disciples.  
When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?” 
On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.  
But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Matthew 9:10-13.
Jesus sat down with sinners in order to show them the way to heaven. This is something we must do.
If you are becoming Christ like you will not judge others especially when it comes to where they will spend eternity. Jesus said,
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.  
For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”Matthew 7:1,2
We can’t be judging others because we do not know what is in their heart. Billy Graham the American Evangelist said,

“It is the Holy Spirits Job to Convict, 

God’s job to judge 

and my job to love, 

                          Billy Graham.

This to me at least in part is what it is to be a new creation in Christ. It is what it is to become Christ like. For in becoming Christ like we are showing the love of God and Jesus said,
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16,17.
