Do the work of an evangelist

Do the work of an evangelist

The apostle Paul writes,

“Keep your head in all situations,

endure hardship

do the work of an evangelist.”

                                                        2 Timothy 4:5.

I was until my retirement a professional clown. One day I commented that an evangelist was someone who wears a red nose and tells people about Jesus. My point being anyone can do the job of an evangelist.

When I taught Sunday school. I use to tell ten year olds that they could be evangelist. I noted they may not know a lot of scripture but they could invite people to Sunday school or church, where others could tell those people about Jesus.

As believers in Christ Jesus we have an obligation to God to tell others of the saving grace that comes through Christ Jesus.

It may not always be easy. In some parts of the world when a person becomes a Christian their family rejects them. Some even have to move away from the villages or towns where they were born. Some are even put in prison or suffer physical abuse.

For those of us who live in the western democracies telling people about Jesus may be easier, but may also mean being rejected by family and friends.

Still we are called to do the work of an evangelist in word and in deed.

The apostle Paul tells us,

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship" Romans 12:1.

Do you do the work of an evangelist?

Is your life a living sacrifice to God?

Please think about it.

Present the Gospel

 Present the Gospel

The Psalmist writes,

"I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart;

before the "gods" I will sing your praise.”

                                                                       Psalm 138:1.

Our world has many gods. According to the Pew Research Centre, in 2010 about 5.8 billion people 84% of the worlds population were religiously affiliated. While 1.1 billion, or 16% have no affiliation.

In addition to this I think you can call materialism a god many worship without realizing it.

A god by my way of thinking is something or someone who is placed above all else. In the context of materialism that means seeking wealth and the status it brings at any cost.

Having said all of this. I DO NOT BELIEVE IT IS THE CHRISTIANS RESPONSIBILITY TO DENIGRATE OR PUT DOWN IN ANY WAY OTHER FAITHS.

It is the Christians job to praise the LORD God Almighty before the world.

Jesus said,

"Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20.

Jesus did not tell His followers to judge the world. Quite the contrary Jesus said,

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged." Matthew 7:1

As believers in Christ Jesus we are to present the gospel message to anyone who will listen. Then let them decide if we are right of wrong.

Please think about it.

A Call to tell the world

A Call to Tell the World

Jesus said to His disciples and through them to us,

"Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20.

As Christians we have a duty to Christ to go into all the world, be that world our neighbourhood, the nation we live in, or somewhere else in the world, and tell people about Jesus.

I believe the way we should be doing this is by presenting the gospel message in love. By saying “this is what I as a Christian believe. I leave it up to you as an individual to believe what I am saying, or not.

We must never force our faith on anyone. For a good example of how to present the gospel all we need to do is look at what the apostle Paul did in Athens a city filled with temples to a myriad of gods.

Acts 17:17-31 shows Paul speaking at the Areopagus at the request of non-Christian Epicurean and Stoic philosophers.

Paul didn’t say I am right and you are wrong. He simply presented the gospel message and let them decide.

If you consider yourself to be a Christian take some time to study Pauls address to the Athenians to see how you can present the gospel message better.

Please think about it.

Speak of Gods righteousness

  Speak of Gods righteousness

Speaking about God. The Psalmist states,

"My tongue will speak of your righteousness

and of your praises all day long."

                                                               Psalm 35:28.

If you consider yourself a Christian do you speak of the righteousness of God to those around you when you get the opportunity?

By this I don’t mean force your beliefs on someone. I mean tell them softly and in love about what you believe. Engage in an open and respectful conversation in which you listen to them and what they believe also.

For its only in engaging people in respectful conversation that they will listen to us. And the message of salvation we offer them through Christ Jesus.

Please think about it.

How will God find you?

  How will God find you?

The apostle Peter writes,

“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.

That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.

But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Him.”  2 Peter 3:14.

No one knows when Christ will return. That however is not important. The one thing that is important is. How will He find you?

Will you be following the teachings of Christ? Will you be displaying the Love of Christ to all those around you both in word and in deed?

Will you be doing your best to tell the world around you about Christ.

Will you be displaying the love of Christ and the fruit of the spirit.

The fruit of the spirit as described in Galatians,

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness and self-control.... Against such things there is no law.”  Galatians 5:22,23.

Please think about it.

Sing

  Sing

The Psalmist writes,

“Sing to the LORD a new song;

sing to the LORD, all the earth.

Sing to the LORD, praise his name;

proclaim his salvation day after day.

Declare his glory among the nations,

his marvellous deeds among all peoples.”

                                                  Psalm 96:1-3.

This is what we as Christians are called to do.

To sing the praises to God.

To proclaim His salvation day after day.

To declare His glory among the nations.

To tell of His marvellous deeds to all people.

As Christians we are all missionaries. We may not go far from home. But we can tell of the salvation that comes through Christ Jesus in our neighbourhood and to our friends, families and foes alike.

Are you doing this?

Please think about it.

You are light

  You are light

Jesus said,

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16.

As Christians. True believers in Christ Jesus. We must remember that we are taking the light of Christ to the world around us. We should not be hiding our faith.

We should be asking God to give us wisdom as to who we should talk to about Christ and the salvation He alone offers.

Are you doing so?

Please think about it.

A Christians obligation

  A Christians obligation

The apostle Paul writes,

“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:5,6.

Are you wise when you deal with those around you, especially when it comes to your faith.

I have found over the decades that I have been a Christian that there are many claiming to be Christians who are not wise.

They are as one friend aptly put it “bible thumpers”. They point out the sins of the world. They point to any groups they disagree with and call them sinners. Worse yet they try to take away or restrict the rights of some groups they disagree with. This should not be so.

Screaming and yelling at people telling them they are sinners is a waste of time. It will only push people away from God. Trying to restrict or take away rights of those you disagree with will push them away from Christ closing all dialogue completely. Not only that it may lead to a backlash that will cause the rights of Christians to be restricted.

No one wants to be told they are a sinner. And most non-Christians I know would not admit to being a sinner. Simply saying they are as good or better than some Christians they know.

Frankly I don’t believe it is our job as believers in Christ Jesus to tell people they are sinners.

It is our obligation to present the gospel of Salvation to those around us and let God work in their lives from there.

Billy Graham the American evangelist once said,

“It is the Holy Spirits Job to Convict,

God's job to judge

 and my job to love,”

                                  Billy Graham.

So are you showing the unconditional Love of Christ to those around you?

Please think about it.

Why do Christians Preach?

  Why do Christians Preach?

Jesus said,

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.

When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.” Matthew 13:44-46.

People have asked me why Christians want to tell the world about Jesus. Well the words of Jesus here recorded in Matthew 133:44-46 says it all.

Christian believe that having a personal relationship with Christ Jesus is the most important thing in their lives and they want to introduce those around them to this belief. A belief they believe has eternal consequences.

So do you believe Jesus is the one and only Son of God, Saviour of all who would put their trust in Him?

Please think about it.

Go

  Go

Jesus told his disciples and through them us,

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20.

Here is a quick question. Are you teaching those around you what Jesus taught. OR are you teaching what others taught you about Jesus?

There’s a big difference. If you are teaching what Jesus taught you are teaching directly from the Bible. You are teaching what Jesus himself taught and what His disciples taught.

If you are teaching what other taught you about Jesus you may not be teaching and presenting the gospel message correctly.

What I would suggest is take some time right now to pray and study the scriptures (study not just read). See if what you have been taught lines up with the gospel message.

Sadly over the years I have seen many people follow a particular pastor, or evangelist only to fall away when the person they are following falls away.

Sadly there are also many people who have fallen for false teachers who have told them God wants them healthy, and wealthy. And while this may be so. God never promised us a life without persecution.

Jesus said,

"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.

If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.

They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me.  John 15:18-21

The apostle John records Jesus as saying,

“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:10-12.

So my question becomes are you presenting the word of God as it is presented in the Bible or are you following some pastor or evangelist who is not correctly presenting the word of God?

Please think about it.

Least and Greatest Possible Number

  Least and Greatest Possible number

Jesus said,

"This, then, is how you should pray: " ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:9,10.

We live in turbulent times. Some Christians believe we may even be in the last days prior to the return of Christ Jesus. Which may or may not be the case.

When Christ will return is not up to us. When it come to Christ’s return Jesus made it clear,

"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” Matthew 24:36.

What we as believers in Christ Jesus should be praying however is that Gods kingdom should come and His will be done here on earth as it is in heaven. While at the same time obeying Christ’s command to,

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:19,20.

As someone once told me we should be doing this,

“to make sure the least possible people go to Hell and the greatest possible number of people go to heaven”.

So my question to you is. If you consider yourself a Christian are you reaching out to those around you and presenting the Gospel message to them?

Please think about it.

Declaring His Glory

  Declaring His Glory

The Psalmist writes,

"Sing to the LORD a new song;

sing to the LORD, all the earth.

Sing to the LORD,

praise his name;

proclaim his salvation day after day.

Declare his glory among the nations,

his marvellous deeds among all peoples."

                                                            Psalm 96:1-3.

If you consider yourself a Christian. A true follower of Christ Jesus are you singing praises to God? Are you declaring Gods name to those around you?

Do the people around you know you are a Christian without you saying a word?

Francis of Assisi wrote two things I like to quote because is tells what the Christian life should be like. He wrote,

“Preach the Gospel at all times

and when necessary use words.”

                                                        Francis of Assisi

“The deeds you do

may be the only sermon some persons will hear today”

                                                                             Francis of Assisi

Please think about it.

Everyone who calls

  Everyone who calls

The apostle Paul wrote,

"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?

And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" Romans 10:13-15.

Here the apostle Paul makes it clear “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

But in order for this to happen believers must go out and tell the world about Jesus. There world may be the world at large or simply family, friends and neighbours.

In order to do this effectively it must be stressed that when we present the word of God to those around us we must do it in love.

When Jesus was accused of sitting with “tax collectors and sinners” (Matthew 9:10-13) he didn’t judge them. If had they probably wouldn’t have listened to him.

Likewise when Paul spoke in Athens to the Epicurean Stoic philosophers and others in the Areopagus (Acts 17) he didn’t judge them. He instead presented the Gospel message and let them determine if what he said was right or wrong.

This is the example we must follow.

Jesus said,

"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven."  Luke 6:37.

This is especially true when we are talking about where a person will spend eternity. Only God can judge where someone will spend eternity.

Interestingly the only time a believer in Christ Jesus can judge anyone is when they are judging those who claim to be Christians. The apostle Paul writing,

"What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?  God will judge those outside. "Expel the wicked man from among you." 1 Corinthians 5:12,13.

This I believe is a safeguard to assure that those who claim to be Christians are preaching the true gospel message.

 Please think about it.

We will never

 We will never

The writer of Hebrews states,

"Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord." Hebrews 12:14.

There is in particular, in the United States, a rise of “Christian nationalism”. People claiming to be Christians who believe the lie that the United states is a Christian country.

Not only that they are becoming more militant backing politicians they believe will do what they want. Someone has said they are hijacking Christianity.

The apostle Peter makes it clear

"Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.

Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us." 1 Peter 2:11,12.

Note Peter tells us to live good lives among unbelievers. Further more he makes it clear we are aliens in this world. We have no country to call our own.

The late evangelist Billy Graham put it this way,

“My home is in Heaven.

I'm just travelling through this world.”

                                                       Billy Graham.

To be a Christian is to do the work Christ commanded us to do when he said,

"Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20.

We will never accomplish this task if we get involved in secular politics or fail to live at peace with those around us.

Please think about it.

Sunday 7 August 2022

The day is here

  The day is here

Jesus speaking to the Samaritan woman said,

“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.” John 4:23-24.

That day is here. Today where I live in North America there are many calling themselves Christians who are not worshipping God in spirit and in truth.

These are men and women. Evangelist, pastors, deacons, even those sitting in the pews who are not worshipping God in spirit and in truth.

There are hundreds of reasons this is happening ranging I suppose from those who misuse Gods word for financial gain. To those who are following a particular pastor or evangelist rather than God.

It is easy to stray away from God. At times it can be difficult to remain faithful and worship in spirit and in truth.

The bottom line here however, I believe is at the very least we are closer to Christ’ return to this earth and Gods judgement on this earth than were believers in the time of the apostles.

We have no time to waste on debating things that are unimportant to our belief in Christ. We have no time to for lack of a better phrase, “do our own thing”.

We in 2022 need to be studying the word of God, praying and asking for Gods understanding of His word. We need to do all we can to draw closer to God in our everyday life.

And we at least in some way reach out with the Gospel message to those around us.

Please think about it.

A Christian duty

A Christian duty

The apostle Paul writes,

"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?

And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" Romans 10:13-15.

Jesus said,

"Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20

It is the duty of all Christians. All who believe in Christ Jesus, to take His message of the Love of God and the Salvation God offers through Christ Jesus to the world. Be that the world at large, their family, friends, or neighbours.

And we cannot do this by judging those around us.

In order to do this effectively however it must be stressed that when we present the word of God to those around us, we must do it in love.

When Jesus was accused of sitting with "tax collectors and sinners" (Matthew 9:10-13) he didn't judge them. If had they probably wouldn't have listened to him.

Likewise when Paul spoke in Athens to the Epicurean Stoic philosophers and others in the Areopagus (Acts 17) he didn't judge them. He instead presented the Gospel message and let them determine if what he said was right or wrong.

This is the example we must follow.

Jesus said,

"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven."  Luke 6:37.

This I believe is a safeguard to assure that those who claim to be Christians are preaching the true gospel message.

So are you telling people in your world about the Love of God in Christ Jesus?

Please think about it.

A Christians duty

 A Christians Duty

Jesus said,

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20.

As Christians. As believers in Christ Jesus we have a divine duty to our fellow men.

If we truly believe the words of Jesus who said,

“Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6.

Then we should strive to present the Gospel Message to those around us. If we believe that we truly know the way to heaven. Then we have a duty to tell others.

And I stress here “we should present the Gospel”. We are called to present the gospel message. Not force it on people. And we are certainly Not to judge others. Especially when it come to where they will spent eternity. That is Gods job not ours.

So if you consider yourself to be a true follower of Christ Jesus are you presenting the gospel message to those around you?

Please think about it.

Friday 24 June 2022

Focus

  Focus

Jesus said,

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged.

For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1,2.

The American evangelist Tony Campolo wrote,

“Let us preach Christ, let us be faithful to proclaiming the Gospel, but let's leave judgment in the hands of God.” Tony Campolo.

My question to anyone reading this who claims to be a true follower of Christ Jesus is, are you doing this?

Are you making sure you are not judging those around you?

Are you focusing on what Jesus commanded us to do when He said,

"Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20.

Please think about it.

A Sacred Duty

   A Sacred Duty

Jesus said,

"Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20.

We Christians. We who believe in Jesus Christ have a sacred duty to perform. A responsibility to God, to point people to heaven. To make disciples for Christ. It is that simple.

We must do our best to present the gospel of Christ to those around us in a loving and caring way.

Thus the question becomes; If you consider yourself a true follower of Christ Jesus are you doing your best to present the Gospel message to those around you?

Please think about it.

Are you ready

Are you ready

In Matthews gospel we see Jesus quoted as saying,

"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come....

So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”Matthew 24:42,44.

If you consider yourself a Christian. A believer in Christ Jesus are you prepared for His return?

When He returns will He see you doing His work?

Another question all who believe in Christ Jesus need to consider is Pauls advice to Timothy when he writes,

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth."  2 Timothy 2:15.

Are you doing this?

Please think about it.
